Supernormal conduction in the human atria.

چکیده
A supernormal period of intraand interatrial conduction was observed in five patients during premature stimulation of various atrial sites with driving cycle lengths ranging between 500 and 600 msec. Electrograms were recorded with filtered, 1-mm apart, bipolar catheter electrodes placed in the high right atrium, coronary sinus, and midleft atrium. The supernormal period, which lasted from 90 to 140 msec, was located at the end of the relative refractory period. During this part of the cycle, the response1-response.) (R1-R.,) intervals were shorter than the corresponding St1-St2 intervals. As in experiments performed with plunge electrodes, the conduction time of premature atrial responses was shorter than in late diastolic or driven beats. Although

Experimental studies on the facilitation of AV conduction by ectopic beats in dogs and rabbits.
Experiments were performed on the hearts of open-chest anesthetized dogs and on isolated rabbit hearts. Intracellular microelectrodes and bipolar surface electrodes were used for recording from and for stimulating the atria, AV node, bundle of His, bundle branches and ventricles. Atrial or ventricular premature beats which were usually blocked or delayed within the AV node were facilitated when...
متن کاملSupernormality in Bachmann's bundle. An in vitro and in vivo study in the dog.
A supernormal phase of conduction between right and left atria was observed in the exposed hearts of anesthetized dogs. Interatrial conduction time of premature atrial responses was reduced by as much as 17% during the early phase of diastole, relative to the conduction interval of basic driven responses. The supernormal phase lasted from 60 to 140 msec and was greater at slower basic driving f...
متن کاملRole of the atrium in determining the functional and effective refractory periods and the conductivity of the atrioventricular transmission system.
Relative contributions of the atria and the atrioventricular (AV) node to AV conduction were studied in isolated, blood-perfused dog hearts. The functional refractory period of the atria, although shorter than that of the AV node, determined the functional refractory period of the entire transmission system in 50% of the hearts. Slow atrial conduction of early beats greatly influenced the shape...
متن کاملThe Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome with supernormal conduction through the anomalous BYPASS.
INCE the original description of the WolffhJParkinson-White (WPW) syndrome in 1930,1 a number of mechanisms have been proposed to explain this electrocardiographic syndrome consisting of a short P-R interval and a prolonged QRS with slurring of the upstroke.2 One of the theories postulates the existence of one or more muscular connections between the atria and ventricles2 5 allowing for early a...
متن کاملSupernormal conduction in the accessory pathway of patients with overt or concealed ventricular pre-excitation.
It was recently shown that supernormal conduction in the diseased His-Purkinje system is more common than previously thought, and is always associated with prolongation of refractoriness. To assess whether supernormal conduction could also occur in the accessory pathway of patients with ventricular pre-excitation, 21 patients with manifestly prolonged refractoriness in the accessory pathway wer...
